Tennis Serve Grip Placement – Where exactly on the handle?

Brent | March 19, 2008 in Serve | Comments (0)

We all know that the right service grip can give you more racket speed which translates to more power, a tighter spin, and better serve placement control.

It’s one thing to have the proper serve grip, but it’s equally as important as to where you actually place that good grip on your racket handle.

A decent cure for anyone suffering from the “death grip” (squeezing too tightly on your racket handle just prior to or during contact with the ball), the lower you can place your hand on the racket handle, the more natural racket speed you can generate.

The Serve – Back Scratching Position

Brent | March 12, 2008 in Serve | Comments (0)

The so-called “back scratching” position on the serve is probably one of the most over emphasized cliches I see taught in the game of tennis.

In fact, it can get to a point where players are so focused on achieving that position that their serve ends up as a weak push at best.

It it true that we need to be able to drop the racket head down below our head during our service motion to generate decent racket speed, BUT, the racket should never actually stop there.

Come on, think about it.  When you visualize someone scratching their back with their racket, at least for me, I get a vision of someone pointing their racket down their back and literally working their racket up and down on some little imaginary itch.

That is absolutely the wrong picture you want to have in your head when you think about your serve’s mechanics.

Watch the video below and then let me know what you think…

Serve Tossing Motion Tempo

Brent | March 6, 2008 in Serve | Comments (0)

One of the most crucial elements of a good serve is your tossing motion.

A proper tossing motion helps you accomplish 3 fundamental benefits.

  1. Toss placement consistency.
  2. Proper set up for a good hitting position.
  3. Helps pull your front hip out under you for better balance and to to be able to swing up into your toss.

The actual physical motion of a proper toss is not tough to accomplish.

But what takes work is the “tempo” of your tossing motion, meaning, a consistent slow arm swing speed prior to and after you release the ball from your hand.

This video will give you some things to think about and to work on…
